Ria Kalkman followed a course about how to direct a choir at the University of Rotterdam in 1984. In the same year, she became the director of the Saba Youth Choir in Holland. Five years later (1989), she founded with others the Seba Children Choir which she directed from the start. After directing several other choirs, she is still the director of those two choirs. She has also directed for more then 25 years the children and youth choir, "Blijde Klanken" (Joyful Sounds) located in Alblasserdam.

In September 2008, she started the project girls choir, "Hadassah". This choir was such a big success that it did not end as planned when their trip to Germany was over.

At the beginning of 2009, OneDay asked Ria to direct the "Groot Nederlands Jongerenkoor", a youth choir that already has more than 160 members and is still growing. We expect that the choir will have at least 200 members when they come to Canada.

Ria has made many CDs with her choirs and has been an important part of many concerts. With her 25 years of experience, she knows how to bring out the best in people singing. Ria has never been to Canada before and is very exited to be part of the Canada Choir Festival 2010.
